The occupational agents we assess

They are grouped into three categories according to their nature. For each category, we conduct the industrial hygiene measurements required by health and safety regulations.

01

First, the study

We identify the agents present at each workstation and assess the risk of exposure. The study determines what needs to be measured and which strategy should be followed.

02

Then, the measurements

We quantify actual exposure using calibrated equipment and compare the results against the applicable limit values.

01

Physical agents

Forms of energy present in the working environment that may damage health through prolonged exposure. They are identified individually and measured using calibrated equipment.

We organise them by type of agent, as each one requires a specific measurement.

Lighting

Lux measurements to assess existing lighting levels in workplaces.

Noise

Sound-level and noise-dosimetry measurements. The measurement strategy is designed around the task, th workstation or the full working day, depending on the characteristics of the workstations being assessed.

Vibration

Assessment of workers’ exxposure to whole-body and hand-arm vibration. Acceleration is measured to determine the normalized daily exposure value A (8).

Thermal environmental conditions

Measurement of temperature, relative humidity and air speed to assess environmental conditions in workplaces.

Heat and cold stress

Measurement of environmental parameters and calculation of specific indices: the WBGT index and heat strain for hot environments, and the IREQ index for cold environments.

Electromagnetic Radiation

Measurement of electric and magnetic fields and comparison against the applicable action levels and exposure limit values.

Ionizing Radiation · Radon

Measurement of radon gas in workplaces in accordance with Royal Decree 1029/2022.

02

Chemical agents

Substances present in the workplace. We identify hazardous chemical agents in the working environment.

As there are hundreds of agents, we have organised them by type of practice.

Qualitative assessment

Identification of hazardous chemical agents in the workplace

Identification of carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic substances (CMRs). The exposure risk is assessed according to their hazardous properties, the quantities used, the characteristics of the process, the frequency and duration of the tasks and the existing control measures.

Quantitative assessment

Measurement of airborne agent concentrations

Samples are taken from the worker’s breathing zone, analyzed in a laboratory and subsequently compared against the occupational exposure limit.

Biological agents

Microorganisms, cell cultures and human endoparasites capable of causing infection, allergies or toxicity. Here, too, we begin with the type of study.

As there are hundreds of agents, we have organised them by type of practice.

Qualitative assessment

Qualitative biological risk study

This study makes it possible to prioritize preventive and control measures, both in activities involving deliberate handling and in activities where biological agents are not deliberately handled.

Quantitative assessment

Industrial hygiene measurements to quantify biological agents

Indoor air-quality study determining airborne mesophilic aerobic flora (bacteria), airborne fungal flora (fungi) and total volatile organic compounds.

Deliberate handling

Microbiological diagnostics
Research laboratories
Research involving infected animals
Pharmaceutical industry
Food and agricultural industry

Activities in which a biological agent is intentionally used or handled.

No deliberate intention to handle biological agents

Wastewater treatment plants

Exposure occurs as a consequence of the work without the agent being deliberately handled. Microbiological diagnostic laboratories are excluded.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
